Summary: The Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard located in Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA has an opening in the Allen laboratory ( for a Veterinary Technician to work with HIV in humanized mice.This position will work closely with postdoctoral fellows to characterize HIV-specific immunity and HIV reservoirs in humanized mice (BLT and HSC+ mice), and to study the efficacy of both contemporary and novel HIV vaccine concepts to block HIV infection and eradicate HIV reservoirs.The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of animal experimental work, including pre-procedural preparations and care of animals, anesthesia administration and/or monitoring, vaccinations, blood draws, etc. The applicant will work closely with the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) staff who will handle the day to day feeding, cage maintenance, and health assessments for all animals.This position is open to both full time and part time applicants. Approximately 50% of the work will encompass hands on animal work, with the remaining 50% of effort conducting basic molecular and tissue culture work related to the project. This hybrid position provides an opportunity to learn hands-on about HIV, immunology, virology, in an academic research setting.The goal of this work is to define the successful components of an effective HIV vaccine or novel approach to cure HIV infection and advance our understanding of immune control of HIV. State-of-the-art facilities are available within an exceptionally energetic research setting. Job Duties:
  • Perform daily work involving the handling of mice with immune-compromised health status, animals recovering from surgery, or HIV-infected mice
  • Injection of human cells into immunodeficient mice
  • Routine monitoring, blood draws, injections and vaccination of immunodeficient mice
  • Daily evaluation of animal health and reporting of abnormal clinical signs to the team lead and veterinary staff
  • Work closely with CCM staff handling the day to day feeding, cage maintenance, and health assessments for all animals
  • Processing of blood and tissue samples for experimental work
  • Work in both BSL1 and BSL2 environments
  • Flexibility in schedule required, candidate may need to work holidays and weekends as required
  • Capable of working independently and as a team member with fellow veterinary staff and/or animal care staff.
  • Qualifications:
  • Bachelor s degree or associates degree in veterinary science.
  • Nationally recognized (Licensed or Certified) Veterinary Technician or AALAS LAT required. AALAS LATG or veterinary anesthetist certification preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of veterinary technician experience on small animals required.
  • Experience working with and performing procedures on mice required. Additional on-site training will be provided.
  • Experience with tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry preferred
  • Candidates must be highly motivated and independent, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Good organizational skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to perform as a team member and must have good interpersonal skills
